Rating Justification

The iVerify Pakistan team has checked this content and has established that it is misleading.

To arrive at this verdict, the iVerify Pakistan team has investigated the circulated video of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif’s China visit.

On April 24, 2024, a video began circulating on X showing Nawaz receiving a guard of honour in China.

The X user, who appeared to be a PML-N supporter based on his past posts, commented, “Red carpet, guard of honour, full protocol. Without any official rank. National leaders are those whom the world trusts.”

The video featured a caption stating, ‘”No government position, but welcomed like a prime minister, Nawaz Sharif received a grand welcome in China.”

The video gained more than 88,000 views.

A similar video was shared here and here.

The video was initially posted on TikTok and gained over 2,900 views.

The iVerify Pakistan team initiated an investigation into the claim due to its virality and relevance to Nawaz’s current visit to China.

Carrying out a keyword search for “Nawaz Sharif received a guard of honour in China” showed that the viral video is of Nawaz’s 2013 visit to China when he was prime minister.

AP Archive also posted the video to YouTube on April 15, 2021, with the caption: “Pakistani PM Sharif welcomed by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang”.

The description of the video said it was from July 5, 2013, and showed then-prime minister Nawaz welcomed by his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang during an official visit to Beijing. The 2013 visit was focused on courting Chinese investment in Pakistan’s ailing transport and electricity-generating sectors.

In the viral video, the person walking with Nawaz is former Chinese premier Li Keqiang. However, during Nawaz’s current visit in April 2024, China’s premier is Li Qiang.

Nawaz went to China on a five-day private in April 2024 visit citing medical checkups. He was accompanied by his nephew Junaid Safdar and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

Reports in the media postulated that the visit was personal during which the PML-N supremo would undergo a medical inspection and meet with Chinese companies on development works in Punjab.

The iVerify Pakistan team has determined that the video showing Nawaz’s auspicious welcome by Chinese authorities is misleading.

The video is an old one from his previous 2013 visit to China instead of from his April 2024 visit.
